Astoria Sanctuary: From Industry to Awakening

Located in the heart of Astoria’s industrial corridor—sandwiched between auto-body shops and stone-cutting warehouses—this project involved the radical transformation of a weathered, two-family brick residence into a luminous House of Worship. The challenge was to create a sanctuary that felt set apart from the grit of the street, yet remained a "thoughtful neighbor" to its surroundings.

The Concept: The Golden Rain Screen

In a landscape defined by corrugated steel and exposed masonry, a traditional glass-heavy facade would have felt fragile and out of place. Instead, we developed a perforated metal rain screen that mirrors the area's industrial materials while elevating them through geometry and light. This gold screen serves as a functional veil by day, providing a privacy buffer that softens the harsh industrial surroundings and reflects the shifting New York sky. By night, the building becomes a neighborhood beacon, glowing from within as intricate, mathematical patterns leak light onto the sidewalk to transform a dark transit corridor into a space of safety and peace. A horizontal band of calligraphy anchors the facade, serving as a poetic reminder that even in a zone dedicated to manual labor, there is space for the work of the spirit.

The Result

The Astoria Sanctuary proves that beauty can be manufactured from the same steel and grit as the city itself. It stands as a testament to the power of adaptive reuse—taking a relic of a bygone residential era and breathing new life into the neighborhood through intentional, culturally resonant design.
